We are a team of mental health professionals based at King's College Hospital (KCH) Emergency Department. We assess people to determine if they need mental health care and treatment.

We provide a 24-hour service to assess and treat emergencies in the Emergency Department and inpatient wards who have mental health problems.

We work closely with community-based mental health and substance misuse services, the police, and local statutory and voluntary agencies to provide mental health care and treatment.

As well working with our patients, we offer psychological care for families of people with mental illness.Ó

The Mental Health Care Home Intervention Team (Lambeth and Southwark) supports people aged 65 and over, whose behaviour has become challenging in the context of a dementia or mental illness and currently living in a day care, residential or nursing home setting and extra care sheltered.

Our aim is to provide a community in reach programme for older adults.

We work on the understanding that community providers have a responsibility to deliver the level of care necessary to meet the needs of people who challenge services. We provide a structured and collaborative assessment and formulation of the behaviour as well as providing learning opportunities for care staff.

The service supports care home staff in care planning including the deployment of non-pharmacological management strategies and opportunities for engagement in meaningful activities. We also provide process consultation and advice on organisational development for care staff and managers if appropriate.

We aim to complement other community health services and work collaboratively with other agencies for the benefit of service users and their carer and to avoid any unnecessary hospital admissions.

We specialise in the treatment of antenatal and postnatal illnesses. Our service is for women who develop a mental illness or have a relapse of serious mental illness during pregnancy, and women who have developed postnatal depression, post partum psychosis or have had a relapse of serious mental illness following the birth of their baby.

We support the mother in developing a relationship with her infant in order to reduce the impact of the mother's illness on the child. We offer a holistic treatment programme, and encourage the involvement of fathers or partners in the process. We admit with babies where it is the wish of the mother and it is clinically safe to do so. We are also able to take mothers without their babies, and offer a programme of gradual reintroduction to the mother on the ward. We also have an inpatient parenting assessment service, providing a unique and highly specialised service to local and national authorities across the United Kingdom. We undertake assessment of women or couples and their infant, where there is potential risk or safeguarding issues arising from the parents' mental health problems.

Our team is committed to providing cost-effective, evidence based treatments that reduce risk, establish a relationship between mother and baby, and prepares them for a lasting return to the community. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, where there is a perinatal section headed by a world renowned expert psychiatrist, who leads many of our staff in carrying out research of international significance.

MST-UK provide training and consultancy services in the Multisystemic Therapy (MST) model to teams in local authorities, health trusts and voluntary organisations providing MST to children and families, where children are at risk of entering care or custody or to support young people to return home safely from care.

We hold the licence for the United Kingdom Network Partnership agreement with MST Services in the USA and under this agreement can provide services across all countries of the UK and in the Republic of Ireland.

What is Multisystemic Therapy?
MST was developed to work with young people with complex behavioural and emotional difficulties and their families, with a focus on young people at risk of out of home placement in care or custody due to offending or other anti-social, and high risk behaviours.

MST is provided by clinical teams of a supervisor and three or four therapists, who offer intensive family interventions in the community, for 3 -5 months, including an on-call service for families. MST is a systemic family intervention, with therapists using a range of evidence-based interventions, including structural and strategic family therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Behavioural Interventions.

Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN ) is an adaptation of MST focused on families where children are on a child protection plan due to physical abuse and/or neglect and are at risk of entering care as a result. It is based on the same principles as MST, but the intervention is for 6-9 months and includes evidence-based approaches to work with adult substance abuse and also trauma in young people and adults.

MST UK are now able to provide UK based training and consultation in both these models.

Who do MST-UK Provide a Service for?
MST-UK do not provide a direct service to children and families, but we provide training, consultation, and organisational support to the following range of organisations:

• Local authority Children's Social Care departments and partner agencies.
• Clinical Commissioning groups and NHS Trusts
• Children's Trusts
• Voluntary organisations
• Health Boards (N Ireland)

The Affective Disorders Outpatient Service is a national, specialist outpatient service at Maudsley Hospital. We provide assessment, treatment and care for people aged over 18 who have complex or treatment-resistant mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder.
Maudsley Advanced Treatment Service (MATS) 

MATS provides assessment, treatment recommendations and follow-up appointments for patients from the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Croydon. The service offers specialist assessment and advanced treatment for people with complicated or treatment-resistant mood/affective disorders, including difficult to treat depression, treatment-resistant depression and treatment-resistant bipolar disorder.

MATS operates under clinical governance from the National Affective Disorder Service (NADS) and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

The National Autism Unit is a specialist inpatient service that provides assessment and treatment to men with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and:

• Comorbid mental illness associated with severe functional impairment
• Levels of risk or complexity that necessitate an inpatient environment
  
  Our multidisciplinary team has expertise in adapting evidence-based treatment to attend to the needs of individuals on the Autism spectrum.
  
  
  • Treatment interventions are based upon a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment of need, including consideration of sensory and information processing factors associated with neurodiversity.
  • Our medical team is expert in psychopharmacological management of mental disorders co-morbid with ASD.
  • Psychological interventions are formulation-based and tailored to the needs of the individual. All patients have access to individual psychology delivered by Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Psychological Society (BPS) registered psychologists.
  • Amongst a range of evidence based psychological approaches, where clinically indicated, we provide Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for mental health difficulties commonly associated with ASD, as recommended by NICE.
  • We provide person-centred evidence-based treatments including a range of skill-building packages to develop life skills and promote independence.
  • We are responsive to the Transforming Care process, working collaboratively with Community Mental Health Services, Clinical Commissioners and families to identify less restrictive opportunities and develop discharge pathways and aftercare packages within the community.

The National Psychosis Service (NPS) is a clinical-academic tertiary service offering innovative individualised evidence-based multidisciplinary strategies to help those people with complex psychosis, including schizo-affective disorder, where standard treatment guidelines have proven ineffective or have not been tolerated. The service aims to enhance quality of life through tailored treatments and promotion of recovery thus reducing the need for high intensity placements and the risk of readmission.

Internationally renowned expertise in resistant psychosis is provided by a team of dedicated clinicians offering comprehensive medical reviews alongside innovative, bespoke treatment approaches. Themes include complex co-morbid physical health conditions which directly affect psychiatric treatment options; clozapine re-challenge after a significant adverse reaction; clozapine non-response.

Our specialist service is supported through established partnerships with the academic Departments of Psychosis Studies and Psychology based within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London. We also liaise with clinical experts within other specialties across King’s College London and King’s Health Partners. The National Psychosis team is closely linked to the Maudsley Pharmacy and the other national specialist mental health services.

The service aims to enhance quality of life through collaborative working towards recovery. We regularly audit and publish our service outcomes and receive excellent feedback from our patients and their families. Benefits include reduction in psychosis, less frequent episodes of illness, improved social functioning, better understanding of the illness by the patient and carers and enhanced engagement with physical and mental health care plans. We have published evidence that admissions result in reduced morbidity, fewer days spent in hospital, lower antipsychotic doses, substantial reductions in the risk of readmission or high intensity placements and less expensive long-term costs.

As our patients may be a long way from home, we aim to make admissions as short as possible and communicate regularly with carers, the referring team and CCGs or CSUs to plan care and facilitate timely discharge.

We provide a national, specialist outpatient assessment, treatment and rehabilitation service for people, aged over 18, who have complex psychosis, including schizo-affective disorder. A psychotic illness involves distorted perceptions of reality thinking, feeling, hearing and seeing often with symptoms of hallucinations and delusions.

National services are for people who live throughout the United Kingdom.

We treat people's physical and mental health. Our aim is to help people maintain their health and to reduce the risk of hospital readmission.

We encourage people, and their carers, to be actively involved in all decisions made about their treatment and care.

Due to Covid the out-patient service is accepting referrals and undertaking virtual assessments.

The centres will contain teams made up of psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, social workers, voluntary and community workers. These people are experienced in dealing with a wide range of mental health conditions. Some of them will have experienced such conditions themselves.

Living Well Centres will offer:

• Short-term support for those with low to moderate needs from our combined team of clinicians, social workers and support workers
• Moderate to high support from our joined-up, focused support team for those with greater need.
