Jo's Journey with Lewisham SUN: A Story of Support and Growth
Lewisham Service User Network (SUN) is a community-based support group for adults experiencing difficulties with complex emotional needs. SUN aims to empower individuals to navigate their current struggles whether emotional, relational, social, or practical through group-based peer support. The network provides a safe, confidential space for emotional support and signposting for practical support, helping individuals manage challenges in their lives.
Jo Taylor's journey with Lewisham SUN is a story of personal growth and community support. Her experience with the group and its impact on her life is a testament to the positive role SUN can play in people's lives.
Finding Connection and Support
"I can highly recommend the SUN group to people" Jo explains. "It has a lot of strengths; it makes you realise that you are not alone, as everyone there has their own mental and physical problems. They will listen to you, not judge you, be supportive, and make you feel very welcome. It is a group that allows everyone to share when you feel ready to do so."
Jo's journey with SUN began over a year ago when she attended sessions occasionally, around once a month. Recently, she has been trying to attend every week or every other week. "The SUN group is always there if you need it" she shares. The group offers three sessions each week—two in-person meetings at the Wallace Centre on Monday and Wednesday, and one online session on Friday.
The In Person Experience
"The advantage at the Wallace Centre is that you meet people face to face" Jo notes. The Wallace Centre, located in Deptford by the River Thames, features a beautiful room with a large semi-circle window that creates a welcoming atmosphere. For some members, attending the group in person is a significant achievement, as it helps them structure their day and step outside their homes. Additionally, the Centre's location offers a peaceful spot for reflection and relaxation.
The Online Experience
"For those who find it challenging to leave their homes due to anxiety, the online session on Friday offers a safe alternative" Jo adds. Members can participate from the comfort of their homes, maintaining their sense of safety and security.
A Supportive Family
"SUN for me has become a very supportive family" Jo says, where familiar faces and the opportunity to make a difference in others' lives reinforce her determination. By sharing personal experiences and offering potential solutions, members learn new skills and strategies to improve their mood and overall well-being.
Jo emphasises the importance of taking baby steps and celebrating every achievement, no matter how small, such as getting out of bed or going for a walk. "Remember, it is only baby steps, and to be proud of whatever you achieve, no matter how small" Jo notes. "SUN is always there for you when you need it."
