Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People

The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People

Opening in 2023

The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People will change the story on mental health and help transform the lives of children and young people.

We developed the centre in partnership with King’s College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and Maudsley Charity, to create a completely new approach to combining reasearch and care.

More than a building

The Centre will be a modern inpatient, outpatient and crisis mental health care space for children and young people, as well as a state of the art clinical research facility. It will also be a new home for the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital School.

Current service users and their families, as well as researchers and clinicians, have been involved in designing the building and their desire to be connected to nature is why the building incorporates landscaped outdoor terraces with extensive planting on each of the it’s eight floors.

A new partnership

Our specialist child and adolescent mental health services will come together with Europe's largest group of mental health scientists, clinical academics, researchers from IoPPN to form a new partnership.

They will work alongside each other to develop new ways of addressing the mental health and wellbeing challenges facing children and young people.

The story so far...

Topping Out Ceremony - March 2022

Since receiving planning permission in 2020 building work has progressed well. Now, in 2022 we have reached the key milestone and celebrated with a traditional Topping Out ceremony, marking the completion of the shell of the £65 million building. The event included ceremonial pouring of concrete to complete the roof of the eight-storey building and the placement of an evergreen bough - a tradition which dates back to Roman times, when tree boughs were used to protect buildings from evil spirits and bring in blessings from the tree spirits. The ceremony brought together service users, carers and many of the key partners involved in the building including donors and the creative team.
