Our research
Research and development are central to achieving our trust’s vision:
Everything we do is to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve and to promote mental health and well-being for all – locally, nationally and internationally.
We want all our service users, their carers and our staff to be able to:
- choose to take part in research that interests them and fits their needs
- feel pride and ownership of research taking place in our trust
- be treated with respect by researchers that may involve them in their projects
- hear about the outcomes of the research that they take part in on a timely basis
This is all underpinned by a commitment to equality and diversity, with a key goal being to ensure equal opportunities for research participation and that our South London and Maudsley research participants and research workforce reflect the population we serve.
In doing so we will improve the quality of the care we offer, improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve, enhance staff recruitment and retention and foster an environment where research leaders of the future can thrive.

Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN)
We have a long, shared history with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King's College London. Our close partnership includes a statement of common purpose to work together to establish the best possible care for people who experience mental health problems.
The IoPPN is at the forefront of mental health care, redefining mental illness, its treatment and its place in society. Alongside world-class research, it provides education and training across a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses, study and programmes.
NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre
Together with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), the Trust hosts the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The BRC is researching new tests, treatments and theories in mental health, neurology and dementia. Its aim is to accelerate the translation of the latest scientific discoveries in to early phase clinical trials in people and other well-designed studies. The findings from these studies can then be developed and implemented to produce new tests and treatments for people with mental and neurological disorders.
Clinical Research Facility
The NIHR and Wellcome Trust King's Clinical Research Facility opened in November 2012. The building comprises two main research areas within King's College Hospital's Cheyne Wing: the Clinical Research Facility, spanning three floors, with a further standalone unit - the Clinical Trials Facility. Each area has been designed and built to compliment the other in terms of ability to offer a unique and neutral space to carry out trials in a dedicated research setting.
Maurice Wohl
The Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute was opened in June 2015. It was built together with Kings College University and King’s College Hospital and is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the molecular, cellular and functional basis of neurological and psychiatric disorders and the discovery, implementation, and evaluation of novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions
The Institute creates an environment that fosters collaboration between researchers across multiple disciplines, and enhances links between academic institutions and healthcare delivery, in order to translate basic research into clinical practice.
