Module 1: Autism and Women

Duration: 1 Day (9.30am to 4pm)

Aims

  • To enable participants to consider a potential range of manifestations and characteristics of autism in women
  • To develop a greater understanding of how to support autistic women

Target Audience

  • Support workers, care assistants, day centre support staff, personal assistants
  • Participants should already have a good understanding of Autism or who have good experience of supporting auttsic adults.  Ideally they will have completed Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism (or equivalent).

Learning Outcomes

  • Critique the reasons why fewer women than men might be diagnosed autistic
  • Examine the importance of diagnosis
  • Recognise differences in social communication and interaction for autistic women
  • Demonstrate understanding of sensory differences
  • Identify vulnerability and risk for autistic women
  • Develop a range of strategies to support autistic women
