Aim

To develop knowledge of what it means to hear voices that other people can’t hear, why people might have these experiences, and how to support people to cope with these experiences better.
Target Audience
Target Audience
- For more experienced staff who support adults with learning disabilities and autism who are looking to develop their knowledge and skills into more advanced and specialist areas.
- Support Workers, Personal Assistants, Day Centre Workers, Junior Line Managers working in a direct care role, who currently work with an adult with a learning disability who hears voices that other people cannot hear.
- Those with a good understanding of supporting adults with a learning disability or have completed our Module 1 ‘Introduction to Supporting Adults with a Learning Disability’ course.
Learning Outcomes
- Be more knowledgeable about what it means to hear voices.
- Have some ideas about the different reasons why people hear voices.
- Feel more confident in supporting their clients to learn about triggers for voice-hearing.
- Understand who hears voices.
- Understand the Bio-Psycho-Social model in relation to voice-hearing experiences.
- How to communicate with people who hear voices.
- Feel more confident in supporting their clients to cope with any distress related to hearing voices.
Content: Workshop 1
- Myth-busting: exploring what ‘hearing voices’ really means.
- Jargon - how do mental health services talk about these experiences, and what do their words mean?
- Exploring different theories about why people hear voices.
- More about triggers for voice-hearing.
- Practical coping skills and how you can help people who hear voices to feel less distressed or manage trigger situations to reduce the likelihood of voice-hearing.
- How and when to seek input from mental health services.
Content: Workshop 2
- How to communicate with people with learning disabilities about the voices they hear.
- Discuss and reflect on the experience of workbased expiriences and the learning from this training.
This course is very useful for everyone working with people hearing voices or even if you don't work with that group. Very interesting and informative, great pace and patient teachers. Overall a fantastic course, thank you!
City & Guilds Course Requirements
In addition to attending all workshops, participants will be required to complete and submit all the following learning activities on Oracle, our virtual learning environment in order to successfully complete the course:
- Develop a self-identified action plan at the end of first workshop.
- Work towards achieving their action plan goal during the month before the final workshop.
- Complete and submit assigned workbook exercises before the final workshop. This will include you completing an ABC chart for someone you support.
- Complete and submit a reflective exercise at the end of the final workshop.
