Aim
- To provide participants with knowledge and skills in effectively supporting people with a learning disability to address their physical health needs.
Target Audience
Target Audience
- For more experienced staff who support adults with learning disabilities and autism who are looking to develop their knowledge and skills into more advanced and specialist areas.
- Support Workers, Personal Assistants, Day Centre Workers, Junior Line Managers.
- Those with a good understanding of supporting adults with a learning disability or have completed our Module 1 ‘Introduction to Supporting Adults with a Learning Disability’ course.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand health inequalities for people with learning disabilities.
- Understand specific health conditions commonly prevalent in people with a learning disability.
- Be able to identify physical health warning signs.
- Understand the importance of making reasonable adjustments to accommodate people's health needs.
- Understand the importance of monitoring records.
- Build confidence and competence in supporting people with their physical health needs.
- Identify who you support is of higher risk and who should receive healthcare screening.
- Conduct a baseline assessment of vital signs.
- Be able to use the RESTORE2 mini to identify the soft signs of physical deterioration.
- Be able to use the SBARD model to escalate and communicate concerns.

- Learning Disability Mortality review.
- Common physical health conditions and diagnosis.
- Monitoring and screening.
- Annual health checks.
- Health Action Plans and Health Passports.
- Community health support.

Content: Workshop 2
- The Restore2 mini
- Recognising the soft signs of deterioration.
- Knowing how to recognise the signs of sepsis
- Using the SBARD (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) model when communicating health needs.

City & Guilds Course Requirements
In addition to attending all workshops, participants will be required to complete and submit all the following learning activities on Oracle, our virtual learning environment in order to successfully complete the course:
- Develop a self-identified action plan at the end of first workshop.
- Work towards achieving their action plan goal during the month before the final workshop.
- Complete and submit assigned workbook exercises before the final workshop. This will include you completing an ABC chart for someone you support.
- Complete and submit a reflective exercise at the end of the final workshop.
