Background

Dr Barnes is a Clinical Psychologist registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). Dr Barnes completed a BSc in Psychology at Sussex University, and then went on to complete an MSc in Mental Health Studies and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London. Pre-qualification, Dr Barnes gained extensive experience of working with children, adolescents and adults with neurodevelopmental differences (e.g. ASD, ADHD and intellectual disabilities) and their families in the community. This included formal training in, and delivery of, group-based interventions for parents/carers of young people with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour.

Currently, Dr Barnes works as a Clinical Psychologist for the Autism and Intellectual Disabilities Intensive Intervention Team (AID-IIT). AID-IIT works closely with local services across London to help them support young people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism who are at risk of inpatient admission. Dr Barnes has a special interest in working with young people with neurodevelopmental differences who present with self-harm behaviours and tailoring interventions based on their individual needs.

Other Roles

Dr Barnes is currently involved in the development of virtual psychoeducation groups for young people recently diagnosed with ASD in paediatric or child mental health services in South London.

Dr Barnes has delivered teaching on psychological interventions for people with intellectual disabilities to postgraduate students on the MSc Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences course at the Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience, King’s College London. She has also delivered training to N&S CAMHS inpatient staff on working with children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities and Autism as part of the Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) initiative.
