New electronic prescription service wins award

Members of the Digital team collect their HSJ Award in June 2024

We are proud to announce that our electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) programme, in partnership with Better, has been named as the winner of the “Improving Medicines Management and Pharmacy through Digital” at the HSJ Digital Awards 2024, recognising excellence in digitising, connecting, and transforming health and care.

ePMA improves patieint safety through reduced medication errors and reduces the time taken to prescribe, check and administer medicins allowing clinicans more time to spend with patients. 

Winners from a total of 23 categories, were announced during a ceremony held at Manchester Central on 6 June 2024, hosted by comedian and writer, Hal Cruttenden and where the achievements of 191 shortlisted finalists were celebrated.

The HSJ Digital Awards are fast becoming an opportunity to recognise and applaud the power of digital products, projects and services to transform care delivery, enhance efficiency, and improve patient outcomes.

This highly competitive judging process strives to ensure that the most effective digital innovations can be “celebrated, scaled and spread”, and provide both a short and long-term springboard for adoption and roll out of successful initiatives.

The expert assessment panel comprised a diverse range of highly regarded figures across the NHS and the wider healthcare sector stemming from clinical, leadership and digital roles.

All 343 entries were reviewed against the following criteria:

  • Ambition – (how the project reached set goals and targets)
  • Outcome – (the benefits for patients, organisation, leadership, efficiencies and cost)
  • Spread – (dissemination of the projects success in terms of ‘pick up’ and if replicated elsewhere.
  • Value – (patient satisfaction and experience, reduction in bureaucracy, time saved for staff)
  • Involvement – (stakeholders ‘buy-in’ and how staff, patients and partnerships worked together to realise the success

Dr. Zoe Keddie, Chief Digital Information Officer at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, said:

ePMA has revolutionised the staff and service user experience, improving the safety and quality of care across clinical pathways but also delivered significant benefits and efficiencies for staff, reducing the administrative burden, releasing clinical capacity and removing the need for paper charts.  The Trust has embraced ePMA across four sites and 48 wards which is a huge achievement. Congratulations to the team and thanks to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved.

Categories cover many aspects of the health and social care sector, demonstrating how digital initiatives can help to improve ‘hard to tackle’ issues such as reducing inequalities; improving mental health through digital services; assisting with the ongoing move to net zero and enhancing workforce engagement, productivity, and wellbeing.
