Matthew McKenzie receives his British Empire Medal
We are delighted to share the wonderful news that Matthew McKenzie, one of our carers champions, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year Honours list for his services to mental health carers.
Matthew is known to be a dedicated and passionate advocate for carers, especially those who look after someone with mental health challenges. He has been running carers support groups for many years in Lewisham and other London areas, as well as nationally through online platforms. He also hosts a YouTube channel, where he shares his insights and experiences as a carer, and offers advice and encouragement to others in similar situations.
Matthew has a personal connection to our Trust, as he has supported members of his family who have used our services in the past. He has also collaborated with us on several projects and initiatives, such as co-producing carers training, facilitating carers forums, and contributing to research and evaluation. He is always keen to promote the importance of carers' involvement and recognition in mental health care. He is a true role model and a source of inspiration for many carers and professionals.

I have known Mathew for several years, and he is very inspiring man. His dedication to the cause for carers is admirable. In recent years he has championed the Triangle of Care at a nationwide level and hosts a network which is nearly 200 strong. All started by him and his passion and experience highlighting the importance of involving carers. I really value Matthew as a great supporter of the work of the Trust in relation to carer involvement. Lastly, Matthew is an amazing wordsmith and poet. His writing and poetry has an amazing reach and resonates beyond the realm of being a carer. I can’t think of a more worthy person to have received this award.
