South London and Maudsley opens doors to BBC One programme Mental Health: Young Lives in Crisis
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has opened its doors to filmmakers for a documentary exploring the mental health of children and young people and the teams who provide care and treatment.
Mental Health: Young Lives in Crisis is set to be broadcast on September 20, on BBC One at 10.40pm.
South London and Maudsley gave Panorama exclusive access to the Trust’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to share the challenges faced by clinicians following the Covid-19 pandemic.
The documentary follows the lives of young people, their families and carers and clinical staff who live and work in the south London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.
David Bradley, Chief Executive of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said: “Mental Health: Young Lives in Crisis sheds light on the work of our skilled, caring and compassionate NHS staff, working hard to support and provide mental health care and treatment for children, young people, their families and carers. “The programme also reflects the challenges experienced by mental health services in London and nationally. We know that addressing these challenges is only possible with strong partnerships across service providers and with children, young people and their families. We are committed to working together with our partners across the health and social care system to drive improvements and ensure children and young people receive the mental health support they need.”
The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People's Mental Health, a £68.8m world-leading research and clinical centre in Denmark Hill, will open its doors in September 2023.
The centre will bring together expert clinicians and mental health researchers from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, (IoPPN), to develop evidence-based new treatments to help reach children and young people faster.
Dr Bruce Clark, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and CAMHS Clinical Director, said: “The pandemic has had a significant impact on children and young people’s mental health and our staff across our services are working very hard to help young people, their families and carers across our four boroughs.
“In response to the growth that we have seen in mental health problems in childhood, we are giving additional focus on preventative and early intervention, both within schools and the local community to support the mental health and wellbeing of parents and children.
“The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People will enable us to support young people to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.”
