Ward manager wins RCN Foundation Impact Award
Nina Hammond, Ward Manager in the National and Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, has been named the Lady Cowdray Award Winner 2021 for outstanding achievement in professional development at the Royal College of Nursing’s Foundation Impact Awards 2021.
The award was in recognition of her MSc thesis, focused on the impact nurses have on young people’s experience of enhanced observation, and her work on the ward.
Since completing her masters, Nina has been teaching on the CAMHS induction for new inpatient staff and presenting her findings, as well as using her learning to think about how to improve patient experience of enhanced observations and make them more meaningful.
Nina Hammond said:
“Winning this award for my research and work has hugely increased my self-confidence. I had always seen research as something doctors did, and nurses implemented. It was a fantastic experience to complete my own and is something I really hope to do more of in the future, particularly as my research topic was something I feel very strongly about.
"The virtual awards ceremony was really fun. I still managed to get dressed up and raise a toast to the other winners, even if it was from my own living room!”
