The team at the Centre for Parent and Child Support (CPCS) are committed to innovating, developing, disseminating, and evaluating training and interventions that make a difference to lives of children and families. Our team leads the national and international dissemination of the following evidence-based approaches:

The CPCS provides tailored training, development, consultation and supervision packages within a workforce development context to help organisations reach their service goals for children, young people and families.
We work closely with our colleagues at the CAMHS Research Unit to produce and disseminate research evidence aimed at improving Ôreal-world' clinical services for families affected by mental health difficulties.
Our clinical team, the Family Wellbeing team has been established to improve the outcomes and protection of families in which parents are affected by mental health difficulties.

Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities (EPEC)
Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities (EPEC) is a highly cost-effective system for training and supervising parent-led parenting groups and courses for parents who experience a range of difficulties with their children. EPEC core parenting courses are adapted for developmental stage and include:
- Baby and us - for parents of babies and infants
- Being a parent - for parents of children aged two to 11 years old
- Living with teenagers - for parents of adolescents aged 12 to 16 years old
EPEC has a series of more specialist parent-led interventions including courses co-designed for parents whose children are affected by autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), parents with mental health difficulties, parents at risk of parental conflict.
EPEC is designed to maximise parent engagement and outcomes. EPEC has a highly successful record of reaching parents experiencing social and economic disadvantage, social exclusion and families form minoritised cultures and communities.
EPEC is supported by thorough research and evaluation evidence. It is recommended as a highly effective intervention by independent bodies in the UK and internationally.
EPEC results in improvements child behaviour, child development, parenting, parent concerns and parent well-being. Parents learn practical communication skills for everyday life and develop their abilities to bring up confident, happy and co-operative children. The programme uses discussion groups and role play, where new skills can be practiced in a supportive environment.
Free crèches are provided alongside each group and parents attending the course can choose to gain accreditation for their work through the Open College Network.

Family Partnership Model
Family Partnership Model (FPM)
The Family Partnership Model (FPM) is an evidence-based approach that has been recognised internationally as an exemplar of effective partnership working and user-centred practice in health services. It has been applied across the field of children’s services and is now being applied increasingly across other areas of healthcare, like adult mental health and learning disabilities.
We undertake a range of workforce training, consultation, and supervision activities commissioned by a wide range of organisations, including primary care trusts, acute and mental health NHS trusts, children’s trusts and local authorities in the UK and internationally. We provide an individual workforce development plan for each commissioning organisation based on their needs and objectives.
FPM is a manualised approach and its effectiveness in improving mental health, relationship and service outcomes has been extensively evaluated through research trials. Evidence demonstrates that FPM leads to improvements in parenting, child outcomes, family engagement, improved service user experience and better use of practitioner expertise and service resources.
Additional programmes derived from FPM include:
The Helping Families Programme - designed for families with complex psychosocial difficulties including significant mental health difficulties, adverse life experiences, child protection and safeguarding concerns and educational difficulties.
Promotional guide system - this evidence-based approach integrates the latest developmental and family science with the skills to undertake effective assessment of need and care planning at key points in children’s development, including pregnancy, infancy and transition to secondary school. The system is widely used in many community health services in the UK.
BabyCHAT - a brief intervention that promotes pre-natal parental bonding, attachment and reflective function.
Practitioners trained in FPM are from every section of the children’s workforce and include psychiatrists, clinical and educational psychologists, mental health nurses, health visitors, early years and child centre workers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, youth offending practitioners, social workers and occupational therapists.
FPM has an active dissemination, is based on a system of workforce development, training consultation and supervision.
