The Mental Health of Intellectual Disability Service (MHID) is service for young people of up to 18 years of age. Our service assesses young people with recognised intellectual disabilities (also referred to as learning disabilities or global developmental delay), and associated behavioural or mental health problems, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder, psychosis, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), feeding disorders, offending behaviours and sleep disorders.

We provide multidisciplinary assessments, interventions, consultations, second opinions and management for young people with intellectual disability and behavioural or mental health problems, working jointly with their local services. This includes advice on neuropsychiatric medication, neuropsychological functioning, behaviour management, sensory integration, educational placements and risk assessment, all in relation to intellectual disabilities.

Within MHID service we run the specialist Prader-Willi Service (PWS) for young people of up to 18 years of age. This service assesses young people with confirmed diagnosis of PWS of all cognitive abilities and behavioural or mental health problems associated with PWS, including ASD, ADHD, anxiety, psychosis and hyperphagia.

We provide multidisciplinary assessments, interventions, consultations, second opinions and management for young people with PWS and behavioural or mental health problems, working jointly with their local services. This includes advice on neuropsychiatric medication, neuropsychological functioning, behaviour management, sensory integration, educational placements and risk assessment, all in relation to PWS.

Within the Mental Health of Intellectual Disability Service and the specialist Prader-Willi Service we offer assessment of mental capacity and competency of young people to stand as a witness.

We provide a range of training programmes, including half-day workshops, one-day master classes and short courses for both strands of the service, aimed at parents/carers and other mental health professionals.

Interventions

Our interventions include:

  • Multidisciplinary assessment of mental health and behavioural problems

  • Cognitive neuro-psychometric assessment using a range of tools
  • Assessment of autism spectrum disorders (ASD)

  • Functional assessment of challenging behaviours
  • Motor, sensory and adaptive skills assessment
  • Speech and language therapy assessment
  • School and home observations as part of assessment
  • Attendance at multi-professional meetings as part of assessment
  • Attendance at child protection meetings as part of assessment
  • Haematological and bio-chemical investigations, where appropriate
  • Laboratory investigations; bio-chemistry, genetic analysis, electroencephalograms (EEGs) and neuroimaging procedures
  • Initiating medication in conjunction with local service
  • Recommendations and interventions based on sensory integration theory
  • Behavioural modification
  • Specialist cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Eligibility criteria

  • Up to 18 years old
  • Male or female
  • Recognised as having intellectual disabilities/global development delay (MHID Service)
  • Recognised as having confirmed diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS Service)
  • Local child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) must support the referral

Care Options

Care option: Mental Health of Learning Disabilities (MHID) assessment

Unit:  Per assessment

This includes a detailed assessment of the young person’s mental health or behavioural problem. The young person is seen with their family in the clinic setting and at school. Home observations are also carried out, if needed.

A mental state assessment, neuro-psychometric assessment and function assessment of the young person’s behaviour is undertaken. The case is then formulated with a differential diagnosis being reached and recommendations made for intervention and treatment. A written report is provided.

Some assessments may require a school or home visit, or additional psychometric tests which will incur additional charges.

 

Care option: MHID treatment

Unit:  Per session

Sessions are offered on a regular basis, both at home and in the outpatient setting or by telephone or video link, with a young person or their parent/carer. Usually between 10 and 15 sessions are required. Regular reviews are provided and there is close liaison with the young person’s family, referrers, their school and others involved with their management.

 

Care option: MHID consultation

Unit:  Per session

Consultation is offered as a two-hour session for complex case discussions between the referring team and senior members of the Mental Health of Intellectual Disability Service.

 

Prader-Willi service

Care option: Prader Willi (PWS) assessment

Unit:  Per assessment; per session

Including review of all previous reports, detailed history from parents, standardised assessment of young person including ASD assessment, psychometric assessment and functional assessment. Observation of child at home and at school.*

 

Care option: MHID treatment

Unit:  Per session

Psychoeducation - to family, school, local authority and other health professionals involved in their care.**

Interventions - Individual psychotherapeutic work including modified cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family work, monitoring of medication, advice about school placements and transition, attending safeguarding meetings.***

* Home and school observations incur an additional charge.

** This is usually charged as three treatment sessions as it involves parents, school and social care.

*** Charged in hourly blocks. Travel charges will need to be added as some interventions will be community-based and may be a long distance from our clinic.
