Why DISCOVER is important

Chronic anxiety and worry during adolescence years can impact on young people’s ability to deal with pressures of exams and coursework, their motivation for studying, and managing everyday relationships, as well as decision-making about the future. Importantly, if left untreated, high stress levels can lead to emotional and mental health difficulties in adulthood, affecting an individual’s educational and occupational outcomes, and the quality of their relationships and wider wellbeing.

Young people aged 16-19 experience high rates of anxiety and depression, and may resort to self harm in order to cope with their difficulties, or lose their capacity to handle academic pressures. Those facing adverse social circumstances are at heightened risk. However, although evidence-based psychological therapy exists, teenagers often find it hard to access suitable help, and may even fail to recognise the signs of anxiety, stress and low mood.

How does DISCOVER help?

DISCOVER supports students to address stress-related problems arising from school and/or home situations, in order to achieve sustainable changes in their wellbeing and mental health. We use a mixture of individual and group activities to give them new ways to address real-life problems.  Problems tackled within the workshop include:

  • Excessive worrying and low mood
  • Low resilience to stress and pressure
  • Loss of motivation and lack of confidence
  • Concentration problems
  • Poor sleep and lack of energy
  • Difficulties organising workload and revision

Workshop participants receive a DISCOVER workbook to work through throughout the workshop day and keep for further reference, as well as access to the DISCOVER app.
