Aims

  • To enable participants to understand the different sensory experiences of autistic people.
  • To enable participants to implement a range of strategies to support sensory and emotional regulation.

  • Support workers, care assistants, day centre support staff, personal assistants
  • People who are new to the role of supporting autistic adults
  • Those who already have a basic understanding of autism and want to know more

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and describe eight senses.
  • Explain sensory seeking and sensory avoidant behaviours.
  • Recognise sensory overload.
  • Demonstrate and implement a range of strategies to support sensory and emotional regulation.

Content

  • Exploring beyond the five senses to include proprioception, vestibular and interception
  • What are sensory seeking and sensory avoidant behaviours?
  • How do we know when someone is experiencing sensory overload?
  • What are some of the strategies we can employ to support autistic adults in their sensory regulation?
  • How can we adjust environments to support sensory regulation?
