More Info
Neuropsychiatry is a specialty dealing with conditions that have neurological and psychiatric component. This multidisciplinary service is a neuropsychiatry service for young people (up to 18 years old) and our experience is mostly with young people who have (or may have) complex neurodevelopmental or psychiatric difficulties associated with neurological conditions.
Our team puts multi-disciplinary perspectives at the core of our work. We offer multi-disciplinary assessment, interventions, consultation and second opinions about psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders in children and young people. Our service includes the following disciplines:
- Child and adolescent psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Specialist occupational therapy
- Speech and language therapy
- Specialist teacher
Our service does not include paediatrics or paediatric neurology. We have close links with other teams within the Trust, King’s Health Partners and the Institute of Psychiatry Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), and have clinical and research expertise at an international level.
Our team specialises in disorders of attention, including ADHD, challenging behaviours (severe aggression, defiant behaviour and self-injury) in the context of a neurodevelopmental or associated complex psychiatric disorder. This includes psychiatric complications of neurological conditions and genetic disorders.
We provide advice on psychotropic medication use in neuro-developmental or neuro-psychiatric conditions, cognitive and neuropsychology functioning, adapted psychological interventions, occupational therapy, behaviour management and developing skills in young people with neurodevelopmental and neurological conditions, as well as educational advice.
If this was not what you were looking for:
The Neuropsychiatry team works together with SCAAND to see young people who have, or might have, neurodevelopmental disorders like autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or intellectual disability with additional mental health or behaviour problems, as well as young people with psychological problems associated with head injury, functional conditions or genetic conditions. Our teams work together and refer between services as necessary.
This page relates to the specialist Neuropsychiatry and Challenging Behaviour team, which provides a specialist service funded for by local areas (clinical commissioning group (CCG) funded). Alternatively, for details of other CCG funded specialist teams for young people with other neurodevelopmental presentations, please see:
For information on the NHS England funded pathway for young people with complex autism presentations or with intellectual disability at risk of admission to hospital, please see:
